USPS Tracking

For USPS tracking, enter your tracking number in the tracker above or on usps.com. Most domestic numbers are 22 digits starting with 92, 93, 94 or 95. International numbers are 13 characters ending in “US”, such as EA123456789US. You’ll find the number on your receipt, in the shipping email, or in your USPS.com account. For help, call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777).

The United States Postal Service delivers to more than 170 million addresses across the US. Whether you’re waiting on a Priority Mail box, an eBay order, or a parcel from overseas that USPS delivers for the last leg, the tracking number is your key to finding it.

This guide covers how to track a USPS package, what each tracking number format means, delivery times by service, what the common statuses mean, and what to do when a package is late or missing.

USPS Tracking: How to Track a Package

USPS Tracking via Carriage Tracking

  1. Copy your tracking number from the receipt, shipping email or seller’s order page.
  2. Paste it into the tracker at the top of this page.
  3. Click Track Now.
  4. Review the latest status, location history and expected delivery date.

If you’re waiting on parcels from several couriers, Carriage Tracking keeps them in one place. That’s handy when an international parcel switches to USPS for the final delivery.

USPS Tracking on USPS.com

  • Go to usps.com and open Track a Package.
  • Enter up to 35 tracking numbers, separated by commas.
  • Click Track to see status, history and delivery options.

USPS Tracking Statuses Explained

A label was printed, but USPS hasn’t scanned the package yet.

USPS in possession of item / Accepted

USPS has the package and it’s entering the network.

Arrived at USPS Regional Facility

It’s at a sorting hub on its way to you.

In Transit to Next Facility

It’s moving between facilities. Updates may pause for a day or two.

It’s at your local post office.

It’s with your carrier today.

Delivered to your mailbox, front door, parcel locker or a safe place.

A signature was needed. Schedule redelivery or collect it at the post office.

Available for Pickup

It’s waiting at the post office or a parcel locker.

Delivery Exception / Alert

Something caused a delay, such as weather, an address issue or no access.

Return to Sender

It’s going back, usually because the address was wrong or it wasn’t collected.

Wondering about mid-route scans? Our guide on what “arrived at linehaul office” means explains why packages can sit at a hub for a day.

USPS Informed Delivery

Informed Delivery is a free USPS service for eligible residential addresses. It emails you a preview of the letter-sized mail arriving that day and shows packages addressed to you in one dashboard. From the dashboard you can:

  • View tracking for incoming packages, even without a tracking number
  • Leave delivery instructions for your carrier
  • Schedule a redelivery
  • Get alerts when packages are on the way or delivered

Can You Change a USPS Delivery Address?

Once a package is on its way, you have a few options:

  • USPS Package Intercept: a paid service that can redirect an eligible package to a new address or hold it at the post office, if it hasn’t been delivered yet.
  • Change delivery instructions: from the tracking page or Informed Delivery, ask the carrier to leave it at a specific spot or hold it for pickup.
  • Hold Mail: pause all deliveries while you’re away.

Some items, such as packages already out for delivery or certain Collect on Delivery shipments, can’t be redirected.

Does USPS Deliver on Weekends?

USPS delivers most mail and packages Monday to Saturday. Sunday delivery is limited, mainly Priority Mail Express and Amazon packages in many areas. If your Amazon tracking shows USPS as the carrier, a Sunday drop-off is normal. If you need to post or collect something at a branch, check our guide to post office opening times.

International Packages Delivered by USPS

Many international parcels are delivered by USPS once they reach the US. Parcels from the UK often start with Royal Mail, and many cross-border e-commerce orders are consolidated by Asendia USA or Landmark Global before USPS handles the last mile. Budget marketplace orders often end with USPS too. Our Temu vs Shein comparison explains how those orders travel.

Gaps in tracking are common while a parcel clears customs or waits for a flight. Once USPS scans it in the US, USPS tracking updates usually become more frequent.

USPS vs Regional Carriers

Some online retailers split deliveries between USPS and regional carriers. If your package isn’t showing on USPS, check whether the seller used OnTrac, which merged with LaserShip and now covers much of the East and West Coasts.

USPS Package Late, Missing or Marked Delivered?

  1. Check around: mailbox, porch, parcel lockers, neighbours and your building’s office.
  2. Wait a day: “Delivered” is occasionally scanned early, and the package arrives the next day.
  3. Submit a Help Request on usps.com if it’s still missing after a day or two.
  4. File a Missing Mail search if seven business days have passed since mailing and there’s still no sign of it.
  5. File an insurance claim if the item was insured. Priority Mail includes some insurance as standard.

For online orders, the seller can often reship or refund faster than a USPS claim.

About the United States Postal Service

The postal service traces its roots to 1775, when Benjamin Franklin became the first Postmaster General. Today’s USPS was created by the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970 and began operating on July 1, 1971, as an independent agency of the US government. It’s headquartered in Washington, DC.

According to USPS, it served more than 170 million delivery points in fiscal year 2025, through about 31,000 Post Office locations and more than 260,000 vehicles.
